CLASSIFIED ABBREVIATIONS: Advertisers pay for classified ads according to how many lines of text they use. Abbreviations are often used to get more information on each line. Sometimes it looks like code - and here's the decoder.
EDITION: Series of issues of a newspaper in one day which differ in local news coverage or time of distribution.
FOLIO: The number of each page together with the date and the name of the newspaper, usually placed at the top of each newspaper page.
HARD NEWS: News stories that give information that readers want and need to know immediately. Current information that might have an impact on people's lives.
LAYOUT (DUMMY): A plan or sketch of each page of the newspaper indicating where photos, articles, ads or headlines will be placed.
PAGINATION: The process of designing and producing a full page of the newspaper on a computer.
REFER: Lines of type and sometimes art that refer readers to stories inside the newspaper.
SCOOP: An exclusive story.
TIP: Information from a source outside the newspaper that could lead to a news story.
